Improved mpg switching back to ordinary unleaded?

I run my 2.2 on Vpower and consistently get 25mpg around town and 30 on a run.
Recently I undertook a longish journey at short notice and had to fill up with ordinary unleaded as the station had run dry of super. The mpg for that journey was showing at 34.
Thought this was odd so filled up again on ordinary and for the last 200 miles of town driving the trip computer is showing 28mpg.
Both around town and on a run the computer claims to give significantly better mpg on ordinary unleaded as opposed to Vpower.
Is this likely to be the case or is the trip computer out?
Anyone else experienced the same. Intrigued so may have to check the old fashioned way between fill-ups.
All seems a little arse about face for want of a better phrase!
