I have been waiting a little while to write this thread but I do feel people need to hear my experience.
I took my 159sw 1.9 jtdm 16v (150bhp) Alfa to AHM back in September 2011 and I am sorry to say that I've had no end of problems
In the first couple of weeks the car seemed fine, better drive, more torque, high mpg and a happy punter.
However, I started to notice vibrations coming through the car whilst accelerating (not excessive foot down, but normal torque in gear acceleration)
I called AHM and they were surprised but said come down and they will test drive. The trip is a 80+ round trip so it was a little inconvenient and out of my way, but what could I do?
I explained when the car was most likely to re-create the bad vibrations (4th / 5th not rapid 2nd or 3rd). Adie didn't seem to hear this and was more keen or accelarating quickly and in 2-4th rather than the higher gears
We concluded that I will keep an eye out on this and keep in contact with him.
Within 3-4 weeks it was more obvious and then the clutch started slipping as well.
So back I went on my 80+ mile round trip. Adie then experienced this shuddering and clutch slipping and exactly when I had explained.
We concluded that the clutch was knackered and he recommended replacing the fly wheel at the same time as this could be causing the shuddering and vibrations. But as I was close to leaving my job and it wasn't critical then I book it in for the New Year but drive carefully so the clutch doesn't completely fail.
So 2012 came and I booked the car in for Monday 9th January for new clutch and flywheel which would hopefully rectify the issues and I'd be a happy man - again.
I picked up the car on Wednesday (I think) and immediately I noticed the shuddering was even worse
I had driven up to Manchester for the weekend so had had a nice long trip to make sure it wasn't something I was doing - which was not the case.
So I called AHM again and explained that this wasn't good enough. I'd spent circa £3k on various mechanical issues but had no real benefit from the upgrade.
What was frustrating was that they didn't really want to believe me and kept on saying that they had never experienced this before with the hundreds of other cars they had done. They were saying it maybe my driving style and shouldn't be labouring a diesel. This was very insulting, yes I'm no mechanic or F1 driver but I know that I am a good driver and wasn't creating this issue.
So I went down to them again with the intention to revert back to normal ECU setting apart from the EGR and DPF removal. I again explained this wasn't good enough and that I'd spent a lot of money. I do agree with them that the clutch was knackered so would have died anyway. However the flywheel didn't and I'd spent £1.2k on an upgrade I wouldn't benefit from now.
Ah yes, also forgotten to mention that the turbo whistle post upgrade was very intrusive and even the neighbours had talked to be about it. Again AHM said this was probably with the car before - however I know hand on heart that it was never this noisy! This is a pretty minor thing for me and I can live with it.
So know the car is back to standard but I really don't think I have been well looked after. I've spent £3k, 4-5 80+ mile round trips, £100 on courtesy car insurance plus all the time having to deal with this.
I don't doubt their expertise, but I do feel agrieved as to how much I've spent. Also, the car was never cleaned (not hard to have a guy come out and give it a quick going over), there was no rolling road pre/post print out even though it states it on their website. When I mentioned this to them, they said it was down, but when I went to pick up my car there was a 500 abarth strapped to it and all hooked up
The list goes on, the gear lever feels as though it is being pushed more towards 5th / 6th rather than sitting in a central position. Also the mpg has gone down considerably, I was getting circa 45 mpg pre upgrade, 50+ mpg post shuddering upgrade but now it is more like 40mpg.
I am now very reluctant to go back to them as I think they want to see shot of me. I am a very calm man, who never lost it with them, stated my frustrations calmly. I am pleased they finally experienced the shuddering as I was going a little nuts but I honestly don't think they believed me at the start or wanted to genuinely make me a happy punter. The nail in the coffin for me has been the insult on my driving (I hate labouring a car - I've had an S2000 for 4 years that thrives on revs and all my other cars have been high reving), lying to me about the rolling road, the new lower MPG, not cleaning my car and in the end me walking away after spending so much money.
Finally, I want to like them and they seem a nice bunch but obviously I didn't go their to make friends
