I feel your frustration with your issues. Just out of curiosity how long have you had the car ? And how much have you spent on fixing it ??
Your issue sounds like it's gearbox related. Mines 5 years old and is on it's way out. The f40 gearboxes tend to show a lot and wear and tear 5 years/60000 miles. Mostly the bearings being shot. I like the car and it's great when everything is working.
Brera man message back at 80-90000miles if the bearings haven't started going you have been blessed by the gods.
I will never get one second hand again though and out of warranty as the parts cost a lot and the majority have to be shipped from Italy so your screwed if it's your daily commuting car. As the latest 159 came out in late 05 I suspect will will see many more threads about the gearbox whining, the PAS seals corroded, PAS reservoir valve gone and inlet manifolds getting clogged up.
Another thing I found interesting was a friend of mine that reconditions gboxes said on the alfas he's worked on they have mostly been 4 years plus 2.4d models. He hadn't seen one 1.9d model in all the 6 years he's been in work. I'm not slating alfas for all you alfa lovers out there I commute doing 28,000 miles a year in a 159 2.4 jtdm, I have had a few cars being vauxhalls, vw's and fords all doing the same mileage and unfortunately over a couple of years tha alfa has cost me £4500, the ford cost me £600 over 2 years. The vw nothing and the vauxhall £1200. I hope none of your get the card I've been dealt, just a very poor experience.
