Help/for future reference:
My 159 2.4 Diesel has had a slight groaning noise when parking for a few weeks. Didn't think much about it beyond making a mental note to get the fluid changed at the next service.
Today noticed a whine when in drive- noticeable only at lower road speed due to tyre noise. First noticied it coming off a motorway. Checked everything with hood up-couldn't figure it out so continued home- on way back it became clear that the noise was coming from the power steering pump.
When I got home- checked under bonnet and turned car off. After switch off power fluid came jetting out the top of the power fluid reservoir (i think it may be a design feature...either that or its just under so much pressure its blown a hole in the cap...)
Opening the reservoir frothy RED fluid.
Just checked the website and discovered the whole wrong reservoir/wrong fluid fitted by Alfa.
Right now one very unhappy bunny- power steering pump is making a heck of a racket and I suspect (hope) that its a gonner.
Trying to get up to speed on all the options (from £1,300 alfa full repalcement for a new rack) re Alfa and reconditioned.
My car is out of warranty so get the joy of picking the bill up my end.
Any info appreciated at this point.
Particularly - Reccomended reconditioned specialists (In Essex area). Better for new or recon, etc.
For Alfa owners who may not be aware-check your power fluid and if its red it needs to be changed asap.
If your power steering "groans" then its a warning sign and don't think little of it as I did.
Thanks in advance for any input for forum members
And thanks to the site- the info here has been amjorily helpful (although not good news on this occassion)
