Cry Like A Baby Windscreen made of sugar glass?

Well have just come back off holiday (great holiday in Italy, but left the car at Gatwick).
On returning back through the 50mph road works on the M25, a stone hit the screen by my wiper.
Now my wife has a 10 year old Zafira with a screen covered in stone chips, some have even started to go white but they are outside the MOT area. My son has a 147 with stone chips all over the place. Again no car or MOT problems.

So what happened to my pristine 159 screen with its first impact?
Cracks from top to bottom.
Are the screens that stressed on a 159 or are they just c--p? and how costly is it going to be with all the sensors attached for the gismos in the car?
I better check my insurance renewal premium next year as I think its going to go up.

If you're fully comp just pay the excess and get a new screen. I don't think this is a common ie. recurring problem you just been unlucky

It depends where the stone hit. If you mean close to the edge [at the windscreen wiper] then I'm not surprised. The Alfa (like many other premium cars) uses the screen as a stressed part of the structure. The glued fitting ensures the glass adds to the stiffness of the body. If the screen is penetrated near the edge a crack will run to the edge as soon as the body is twisted. The favourite failure time after a chip is when you put one wheel over a speed hump.

The older cars you mention may not use the glass as a stressed item or, more likely, the chips are not close to the edge.

When you get it done try not to use the car until the new glue is really set or you'll find the structural stifness affected.

Gone through 3 screens on the 159. Bad luck I guess £90 premium isn't to bad once but on the 3rd I was a little distressed.

No probs with the sensors, they should check with you what you have ( lights, wiper etc) and order the correct one. Just check it all works afterwards!

I've had a couple of hefty stones hit the windscreen on mine and had no problems (one nearly gave me heart attack it was such a bang). You were probably just unlucky where it hit or there might have already been a small chip there.

I had a screen go after a month or so; it wasn't even chipped - the windscreen chap said it should be a warranty issue in his opinion but of course it wasn't!

Apart from a few chips and a scored passenger window on the Brera
(replaced under guarantee) I've had zero issues with any glass on
either the 147, Brera or the 159.

No issues at all with Alfa - ever (either the 159 or the 166).
Citroen however, now there's another story...... just count your lucky stars
