Improved Economy

Just a quick note to say that I tried using the cruise control more and the car certainly seems to respond with improved fuel economy.

Typically I dont use it on a 50/60mph limit road but if you are bumbling behind a Nissan Micra and can't get a clear way round, just stick the cruise control on and watch the MPG improve. I did a test between manually trying to hold my foot on the throttle and using cruise control to maintain the same speed. Cruise control certainly netted a few mpg benefit.

Seems the throttle system is incredibly sensitive to the slightest move of the pedal and fuel economy adjusts to match.

Worth a play

I think it depends on the type of road. Using the cruise control for long, flat motorway driving will deliver better consumption for the reason you state - less blipping of the throttle.

However, on roads that undulate, it can often cause more consumption because the engine pushes to maintain the set speed up the hills, which uses a lot of fuel.

For example, I get good mpg on an M5 trip from Exeter to Bristol using cruise control, as the road is largely dead flat through Somerset. The same distance/speed on the A30 into Cornwall gets much less mpg because of all the steep hills.

I believe what doesn't kill you makes you...stranger.
