Help - smoke bellowing out of my new 159!
I've just picked up a gorgeous 159 JTDm 1.9 to replace my old Saab.
It looks beautiful and I just popped to our local tesco to admire it in their undergroud floodlit car park. I left it idling and walked around it a couple of times to soak up the beauty. Perfect.
On the way home I noticed a whirring noise that sounded like a very powerful radiator fan, that ran on and on. Quite noticable when stationary. I put it down to the car getting hot while it was idling. The temp gauge was at 90deg so I thought all was well.
Anyhow, when I got back home (about 2 miles) I noticed a burning smell as soon as I opened the door and upon getting out I noticed a few clouds of smoke!
I opened the bonnet and got a LOAD of smoke bellowing out and going up into the air in clouds! It seemed to be coming from the back of the engine. The engine was off by this point.
I got a torch out and couldn't place where the smoke was coming from at all. It wasn't a smell of exhaust or diesel, it was just like a cross between burning cardboard and cigarette smell.
As the car cooled and the smoke subsided a little I am sure the smoke was coming into the engine bay from under the car a little further towards the rear - around the catalyst area.
When the car was quite a bit cooler, I jacked the car up with a couple of trolley jacks and crawled on my back underneath. There was still wafts of smoke emerging from the car and it stank around the cat area. I could feel heat radiating off the cat onto my face but I guess thats to be expected as they get damn hot anyway. Apart from that no clues at all and nothing looking like its been on fire.
I was going to take the family away in the car next week but I suppose I'm going to have to use the old Saab now.
It was a private sale so I guess I have no come-back on the seller but he's going to get a piece of my mind in the morning!
Any ideas what it could be?
