I'm a bit bemused, because I've had no problems with mine. She's a year old and 15,000 miles and I have only small one stone chip (which I haven't sought to fix yet, to be fair). That's over country lanes as well as A roads.
I tried the Swisswax opaque wax, but it didn't seem to make any real difference and it is expensive. I take her to my local East European car wash people and after talking them through the "no wax" approach, the wash has been fine. Indeed, they jostle for the opportunity to be the one washing her!
The Alfa finish is not as finicky as the BMW that got all the headlines. I've found it robust (my previous black gloss Brera had more problems with chips) and because it is actually a slightly satiny finish rather than real matte, it doesn't get affected by bird dropping etc. And I keep her outside, not in a garage.
The worst problem are the alloys - the inevitable kerbing shows up much worse on the black rims.
I must admit, I worried myself silly before purchase over the paint and nearly didn't buy the car. I was wrong to worry.
I believe what doesn't kill you makes you...stranger.
