DPF Regen: more frequent and longer lasting than usual?
... or is it something else?
I normally have a DPF regen about once per tankfull.
Over the weekend I did a 1500 km round trip from Canberra to Melbourne and back. About five hours into the trip on the way down on Friday night, the fuel consumption went up, the engine lost a bit of power and started running roughly. The turbo gauge showed regular "surges" and went to zero when the car was coasting downhill. Everything you normally expect when a DPF regen starts.
However a DPF regen normally takes about ten minutes. I didn't time this one exactly but it was still going after about 30-40 minutes. I then stopped for a coffee break. After five minutes I got back in, restarted and it ran sweetly and normally for the rest of the trip down.
Today on the way back I was about three hours into the trip when another apparent regen started. This one I timed, and it lasted twenty minutes, then the engine started running normally. But after only another five minutes another apparent regen started, which lasted fifteen minutes. Shortly after that one seemed to finish I stopped for another coffee break. Once again, after the engine had been stopped for five minutes, it ran sweetly for the rest of the journey.
What is going on? Grateful for any suggestions, especially before this Friday when a scheduled service (the last under warranty) is booked.
