Dedicated 159 double muffler

Hi there,

This is my first post here so I'd like to greet you all
Lately I decided to buy a dedicated double muffler for my Alfa 159 1.9 JTS.
It looks like this:

Today I took it to a mechanician at Alfa Service Centre and he told me that he is doubtful about the right muffler. In his opinion, after the assembly it will be too close to the fuel tank filler pipe and it may be dangerous in hot weather, when the muffler is very hot. I called the manufacturer and they told me such exhaust was assembled on Alfa 159 already and there were no problems at all. What do you think about it? Maybe it's necessary to use some thermal cover as on the left side?
Alfa Romeo prepared this vehicle for double muffler (suspension hooks, blank cover in the rear bumper) so they must realize that the second muffler will be close to that fuel pipe...
Any clues will be welcome!

Thanks a lot!

Someone with a factory fit double exhaust pipe should be able to tell you if additional heat protection is fitted.

Totally agree with the above reply-
I've looked into this idea, it certainly enhances the look from the rear, making following Drivers / Admirers even more jealous.
But your gonna need the additional heat shield protection, as fitted to the OEM Double exhaust systems on the 2.4 Diesel & 3.2 Petrol.
Last thing you want is for it to all go up in flames- then the Insurance Company telling you its been modified without having the right equipment installed- and not payng-out when you needed it most.
Always use protection my friend - don't wanna be catching something (catching fire that is) !!!

The heat shield is very important!

Most cars come out of the factory with one exhaust outlet and the petrol filler fitted to the opposite side. This is needed for crash protection. In a heavy rear end smash you want any spilled petrol not to get on the exhaust. I expect Alfa Romeo has put in extra protection for the Right Hand exhaust to prevent petrol getting anywhere near it.

I'm thinking about buying this double exit exhaust on ebay in the next few days (320 inc delivery) but I'll find out how much the heatshield from Alfa is first I think.

If I found out I'll let you know.

sorry to resurrect an old thread but i also want a twin exit pipe on my 1.9... however i've been advised to have a look at the "spare" exhaust hole on the right side of the 1.9 bumper as it is not the same as the one in use on the left.

anyone got any pics or advice?
