Alfa 159 Ti 1.9 - musings after first month of ownership...
After a long search i finally found a decent 159 Ti 1.9 last month in red on a 58 plate, registered early 2009. Mileage was 27k.
The bonnet is rather badly stone chipped, but the price was good I felt - I agreed a price of £13,850 with a small main dealer in Chester. Trade in for the GT was a bit low, but they did put 4 new Contis on the 159 which ain't cheap!
The 159 is a league ahead in terms of build quality, comfort and ride quality, even on the 19s with sports suspension. She feels very planted when cornering enthusiastically (probably because she is so lardy) and the brakes have lots of initial stopping power too.
She feels very, very heavy though and the 1.9 engine isn't the best. Get caught napping the wrong gear at the wrong time and lag is monumental. She is also very slow on the motorway for getting up to speed, paticularly once you pass 60mph, though I guess a lot of this depends what your used to.
The fuel economy is very poor I think. My long term average is around 31 at the moment and creeping ever closer to 30 and that is driving quite relaxed. She has to tackle my daily comute which is rush hour bumper to bumper for 8 miles each way, but I do also cover some motorway miles going seeing clients so not impressed with this. Even on the motorway, whereas the GT used to lope along at 85 and return an indicated 50mpg, the 159 mpg plummets if you do more than 70mph.
Also whilst at first I liked the short shifter gear change, it certainly does not like to be hurried and feels very clunky and heavy. It is also hard to change up in the lower gears smoothly, all of which conspires to make her pretty annoying to drive in thick traffic.
So all in all I am loving the quality and comfort, but not liking the fuel economy, gear change or power delivery. Which may I say, pretty much sucks, as a driving enthusiast needing a car for business use!
I am hoping a visit to Gus at Alfatune will sort one of the issues and maybe improve another. Just need to find space in the diary for a day trip to St Helens whilst also convincing Mrs Junior that £700 on a remap is a shrewd 'investment'!
Would be interested to hear what other 159 drivers opinions and experiences are...
