Unfortunately a diesel will always sound like a diesel. A colleague has recently bought a brand new BMW diesel and even that sounds like a tractor when it starts. Having come over from petrol it initially took some getting used to.
I appreciate the cost of diesel going up, but the way I drive, the diesel has it on economy. My last car being petrol, I used to do a tank in a week. (pretty much the same size tank) Now a tank lasts over three weeks. I know diesel has gone up, but it has still made financial sense for me. One of my friends has a 1750 Giulietta and he loves it, but he is often at the garage refuelling, plus the £235 tax.
I suppose, it's whatever suits your driving style, and budget.
