Potentially expensive steering problems?
Nearly 3 months into 159 ownership and the warranty I got is coming to an end. So, I was thinking of booking it into the local Alfa specialist (Intaservices) for them to check it over to see if there is anything wrong that can be fixed before it runs out.
Just before I picked it up, the car had an MOT with no advisories, but Iím not sure whether any problems like those listed below would be picked up.
At low speeds, the steering appears to be a little notchy, by which I mean that turning the wheel isnít smooth, like the second hand on an analogue watch, but slightly jerky like on a digital watch. The effect is very subtle (enough to make me feel I may be imagining it). It turns OK, donít get me wrong, but I was wondering if this is a feature peculiar to 159's or whether the rack/power steering is on itís way out.
At the opposite end of the scale, at high speeds, the steering feels abnormally light and slightly vague. It certainly doesnít feel ďplantedĒ or glued to the road. Itís almost like the front end is lifting in the airflow. To be honest, if feels a little scary, so I try not to exceed the speed limit too much, especially when itís a bit breezy.
The car feels at itís very best between 50-70 on sweeping A roads, where the steering feel is just right, which is why I'm in love with the car, despite having the AA out twice last month and the appalling MPG...
Where there's no speed camera, there's no speed limit!
