Need advice from owners of older 159s
I'd be grateful for some advice, but first a lengthy preamble.
My 159 2.4 will come to the end of its three-year lease in June. My choices are:
1. Re-lease the existing car at its depreciated value and save on the fortnightly repayments.
2. Get another 159.
3. Get another marque.
Alfa ownership has been a pretty good experience for me so unless something catastrophic happens I'm ruling out option 3 at present.
Option 1 has its attractions. The cheaper leasing cost would save me a few grand a year. The car is definitely not a lemon and of the four problems I have had, two have involved the replacement of the offending part with a redesigned part which should not cause the same problems again (they are: aircon pipe which was fouled by the wiper mechanism, and plastic coolant bleed valve). One was the under-specced OEM battery which has been replaced by a much better aftermarket battery. And one was a rear window winder which came adrift due to a component failure.
Option 2 was originally my preferred option, but I find it would require changing the specification of the car. For reasons unknown, the Australian Alfa importer ATECO no longer offers the 2.4 with manual transmission, and I don't particularly like automatics. I do a lot of kilometres including several trips a year between Canberra and Melbourne (about 1500km per round trip) and the diesel is attractive as a result. But it seems that ATECO is not going to import 159s with the new 2.0 diesel. Of what's left, the only thing that appeals is the 1750.
So at this stage I'm seriously considering re-leasing the current car. But in that case it will no longer be under warranty. By June I expect that it will have covered about 80,000 km (say 50,000 miles). Can I ask owners of older 159s what their experiences of reliability and maintenance costs have been in the 50,000+ miles phase of the cars' lives?
If it's relevant, the car is a December 2007 build (pre the early 2008 factory shutdown and minor mods).
