I have taken a deposit against my V6 GTV and intend to start test drives this weekend for a replacement.
My initial thought was Audi TTs but now considering 08/09 Brera S Prodrive.
Anyone got any thoughts or observations about the Brera. Try and be objective!!
Well, I've owned a newer TT 3.2 Quattro and test drove a Brera S and now own a 159 3.2 Q4..
I test drove a few cars at the time. I was keen on Audi for a while for the boring reasons, I drove an A3 3.2 Quattro and it was ok. A mate I work with is a real Alfa enthusiast told me to go drive the Brera, I found a Brera S locally and loved the look of it.
My wants and needs ultimately defined my choice, other people will agree or disagree with my opinions, believe me, I'm full of them.. Ha ha ha ha..
I wanted a fast, comfortable sporty car, good traction in the wet, good driver feedback and a big engine; I'm a petrol head... There's no replacement for displacement!!
The Brera S was disappointing for a day to day car, brilliant on a circuit but with the roads in this country I couldn't put up with the hard, and I mean very hard suspension and the noise from the tyres. If you sit in either front seat comfortably, (I'm 5'10") There is about 6" gap behind you for someone's legs.. Pointless. It's a fraction better than the TT and those seats are ridiculas!! If an adult sits in the back there's no room for their head because the glass slopes at a steep angle. Again, pointless and about a 3" gap for legs.
If you don't have friends or a family then it's ok.
Driving the TT 3.2 Quattro paddle shift fast around long and tight corners was simply amazing, the seat and steering wheel position reminded me of racing single seaters. The feel from the steering and brakes was very good but the down sides were, the suspension was hard as F***, paddle shift seemed lost when just cruising, I hated it in the end, I should have never had bought it, not to mention the money I lost on selling it.
I took my time to choose my next car, the Brera is close to the 159. I've owned my 159 3.2 Q4 Lusso for about 4 months now and still LOVE it! I'm a new and faithful Alfa fan now! My passion for driving again has returned, it's a driverís car, not a girlís car, like a TT.. The drive feedback is spot on, not as fast as the TT but so what? Still 0 - 60 in 7 seconds. The lowered suspension rides the bumps well for being a longer wheel base chassis compared to the TT. Plenty of room for my instant family..
I think for the money, the 159 Q4 is by far the best looking car and fantastic drive out there but of course, I would say that.
Yes it is expensive to run, no reliability problems but just the petrol and tax. Ah... Speaking of reliability. I had a little race with my mate with a GTV Cup (120) from work, I had the TT for 2 weeks. Mine was a little bit quicker but he got home first in the end..
My TT broke down running on 4 of the 6 coil packs, 30 min into my 90 min drive home. It took me about 4 hours in the end.
In a nut shell, donít get a boring Audi or BMW that everyone else has! Go drive the cars with an open mind and you'll see what I mean.
This is the TT I had and the 159 I now drive.
