Well the steering on my 50K 3.2 Brera goes from bad to worse.
I swapped out the reservoir and the red fluid about 2 weeks ago, replacing it with green. The pump was already rumbling at that point. The noise became less for a few days and then got worse and on top of that, I am now getting a metal on metal screech from the rack. I bit the bullet at the weekend and ripped the pump out. (I can explain exactly how to do this if anybody is interested, very fiddley job). The pump is going off to be refurbished, cost £120+VAT. Buy Sutton Auto Factors in Long Eaton, near Nottingham. They also sold me a new belt, well worth doing whilst you are in there.
To my surprise, the almost new green fluid was now jet black and I can only assume that this is a result of the green mixing with the remnants of the red?? There is no obvious sign of contamination or nasty metal filings.
What is concerning me now is the noise from the rack. It sounds like it's coming from the drivers side end of the rack and I am wondering if it is these track control arms and not the actual rack itself.
I have a cunning plan.....When the pump is back and if the rack still makes the same noise, if I jack up both front wheels, block the chassis and try the steering with the engine running, the load on the rack should be less and the noise should reduce? Then if I knock off the track rod ends, the noise should go alltogether as there will be no load on the ball joints. If the noise persists, it must be inside the rack. All of this can be done without disturbing the tracking. Long and short of it is, no noise £46 continued noise £500+.
We wait to see...The pump is back at the weekend and I have 3 litres of GI/R to fill her up.
