Had the car sorted at SimplyAlfas last week, all four wheels refurbed, bonnet and bumper prepared and resprayed. A total joy to see, better than new, utterly gorgeous!
However, 75 miles into the journey to Torquay straight after picking the car up, "Check Engine" flashes up on the dash readout. No loss of power, no stutter or miss fire, no over heating. So I pulled into the services a mile later (how lucky was that?!) and call John at SimplyAlfas. He suggested it was the electrical connector on the DPF that had given up part way through a regen. I restarted the car and the warning still came up. John suggested that it would be ok to continue the journey, but call him if the problem gets worse.
20 miles later the car lost power, going into Limp Mode. Even dropping a gear or two gave no power, it just wouldn't rev or pull. Called John again, he confirmed the Limp Mode, told me that turning the car off and restarting would clear the mode, but then I would have to drive around the problem by not asking for too much power.
The rest of the journey was ok, until hills came into view, then it would just get slower.....
Eventually got to Torquay, then turned around. I did the 200 miles without stopping on the return journey, and the same happened, cruised along at 70mph perfectly fine, until a hill came along, then it was a steady decrease in speed to 50mph. But it was okay, I just had to manage the lane changes and plan ahead.
The as I passed Worcester, I tried to pull up a hill and it was off! Full power had returned. So I used it all the way back to Sutton. Perfect and totally back to normal, but with the EML still on.
Parked up last night and have left it today. Was going to take it back in for a diagnostic test, but I will drive it for a few days this week and see how it goes, then book it in later on this week.
A strange experience for sure. It didn't let me down to be fair, still got me home after the 400 mile round trip!
All this because of a probable split/broken electrical connector!
Still makes me smile when I looked out at it this morning! Was rather annoyed on the journey, was soooo chuffed after the body and wheels had been sorted, then it had let me down a bit with the EML. Especially after I had decided that I wasn't selling it to get another one, obviously trying my patience.....
