I ran with Pirelli Sotto's on mine (2.4sw) over the winter - massive difference in ice & snowy conditions, very sure footed and gave a huge amount of confidence when driving in poor conditions. Wet weather handling also very good. As a (probably poor) example - I was meeting friends for an evening out, we drove on a snow packed country road for 4 or 5 miles, not slides or twitches. My brother (in a Focus or Fiesta - low-middle of the range), had to go far far slower, was sliding all over and opted to take a 45min detour on the way back, sticking to treated roads.
I did want the Vred's winter tyre but couldn't get hold of that at the time - I paid I something like £800 all-in for a set of 18" Alloys and the tyres! I actually got them as my fronts needed replacing anyway, and there's plenty of tread for this winter coming.
You should, as stated above, always run 4 winters - never just on the front or rear.
