The air con service can so easily be overlooked, but without the correct lubricant in there the system can dry up and cause the seals to go, then the refrigerant leaks out.
There is a safety system built in so the compressor will not burn itself out with nothing in the system, but not advised to get it to that point!
Mine developed two separate leaks, one from the pipe leaving the compressor, the other from the condensor, grrr.... In each case the noise made was a distinct metallic low grinding, came and went as the compressor was switched on/off.
The advice given is to use the air con at least once a week for an extended period. This keeps the lubricant flowing over the joints, keeping them sound. Wise advice......
