There is no competition really, you either go for the 159 and bite the bullet because you have to live with this car not us...or, try a Subaru Impreza or the STI hatchback version used say, 08/09 or for a cheaper but still nice car, go for the Legacy.
True, its no Alfa but damn...it's a hell of alot better than a bloody ford or even a honda. I would rather drive a cold day in hell than a ford or Honda.
But honestly, if you want to save on bucks, go the Subaru Legacy and try to get the 2.5ltr version. OR...conversly for just a BIT more cash in the used car market, you should try the Impreza STI hatchback - not the new ****e; with turbo and a decent amount of room in the back with decent rails to put anything up top as well as more fun to drive than your previous choices, it perhaps the better of the compromises.
Yet at the end of the day thats just my 2cc worth...but remember that the long term drivability, economical value, functionality, diverse applications with that of the families needs, fun-factor for you who has to drive this longterm as well as safety, well I would be saving for the STI Impreza or even the higher spec Impreza.
But I am sure you will get a variagate of information conflicting each other, but thats what you get when you have one of those "Help make my choice with a car" threads
And I have not read the whole thread yet so if you have already made your choice...then a good-ol clap of the hands are in order.

Last year I decided it was time the family enjoyed some good old camping holidays and bought a secondhand tent and loads of kit on eBay. However, with so much kit it is a real struggle getting the family and all the gear in my 156 JTS, even with a big Thurle roofbox fitted. Because the wife will only go posh camping there is just too much to carry and the inside of the car is sooooo full I no longer think it is a safe way to travel.
So, I need an estate car. Now after 2 Sud Sprints, a 33, a 75 and three 156s I would love have a 159 2.4 jtd. They have the space and look bloody great - even better with roof rails, which could still accommodate the roofbox if needed (wouldn't use a roofbox again without rails as the fixings damage your door seals with the hidden nipple attachment on the 156). But, I've heard so much bad stuff about them. Costly repairs, rattles and creaks ..... the list just goes on. The alternative is a good old Ford Mondeo 2.0 tdci Titanium X which deep down I know will be the better car. But will it excite me.
Question is 'is the pain of owning the Alfa worth it'? Any thoughts? Is the Alfa as bad as everyone says (even the Alfashop advised against buying one and they would benefit from the unreliability!)? Does anyone have a Mondeo estate and if so what do you think?
