Hmmm 159 SW 1.9JDTM 16v (2006) - Engine ticky/tapetty

Hi Everyone,

I must say, I've been having a good look through your site & forum & it looks top class...and dead friendly

I've owned my SW for approx 3 months, love it to death (& as everyone else says, always have to look back at it a number of times after I park it up, walk away from it!

The only slightly annoying thing I now keep on noticing is a tappety/ticky noise most days after I start her up. I can't quite work out which part of the engine it's coming from, but on tick over you don't really notice it...but whenever you accelerate it's definately there.

It's noticeable from inside the car, not too much, but once you know the ticky noise is there, you can't help by notice it.

To put my mind at rest, I had the cambelt/water pump replaced last week, along with a full service. I mentioned the noise beforehand to my local garage & they said they'd take a look.

When I got it back, they said they couldn't find anything wong

Now I'm starting to get paranoid everytime I hear it. On the odd occasion, when you start it sounds absolutely A1. But at the wheel, accelerating, my ears seem to hone in on it more & more.

It almost reminds me of how my first car (a Mk2 Escort 1.3) sounded!

Anybody ever come across a similar thing or have any ideas what it could be?

Mine made that noise from new - main suspected culprit were the injectors. I was told it was a "feature".
I found it irritating and spoiled the refinement - I no longer have the car

I have the same 'feature' its much worse when the engine is cold. It going to the new dealer that's just opening in Worcester tomorrow. I'm hoping that they'll be keen to build a customer base and offer some good service to fix it, we'll see....

Doogie, welcome to the forum. Dont worry about the tappety noise, really! It is the injectors and they are always more noticeable when cold. Its the noise as the injector snaps shut. See my thread here:

Or you try taking the plastic engine cover off. I find that mine is hitting off something on idle cold.
