Alfa warranty 101 for the newbie
I'm a trifle confused by the Alfa warranty system. The only other brand new car I have ever bought was a Saab, from my local dealer and it was a three year warranty that seemed clear as a bell - as an aside, the only thing I ever needed fixed was a rear wiper that stopped working.
Now, my new Alfa was bought from a dealer a fair distance away. It appears to be comprised of a two year "manufacturer" warranty and then a third year "dealer" warranty for which one has to apply. The former warranty appears to allow me to take the car to my local/any Alfa dealer rather than the seller for any issues. The latter version appears to have a special card that details the seller as the place to go. Does this then force me to go back all the way up the motorway for the third year? Can one change it to a dealer nearby? Why does it appear that one is tied to a dealer in the third year when other manufacturers continue to allow warranty support at any of their dealers?
Next, to maintain the warranty, one assumes that all servicing has to be done at a fully authorised dealer? Does that mean Alfa independents are out until the warranty conditions expire? Is there anything an independent can do to the car while under warranty conditions?
I'd appreciate advice suitable for mildly bewildered gentlefolk.
I believe what doesn't kill you makes you...stranger.
