How do our European friends manage?

Here's how I manage.

I live in Italy in an area which gets snow on a regular basis. Winter tires are not only well worth it, but they (or chains) are required by law on most roads. Smaller roads, some which I classify as goat paths, get cleared pretty quickly, so chains are a very poor option.

I fitted taller, narrower winter tires on smaller diameter, narrower alloy wheels. This works out very well on snow and/or ice, and makes a big difference on cold damp roads too.

However I fitted them to my Fiat, not my Alfa. The Fiat is my grocery-getter and bad weather car. I keep my Alfa Spider tucked away in a heated garage unless the the weather is decent. Works for me.
