Having driven diesels for the last 20 years, I would not consider using high revs to get good rapid progress, most of the grunt (and the whole point of a diesel) comes around the max torque of the rev range, about 2250 for the 1.9 Jtdm. I find with mine, as I have with other diesels, that once you get to far past the max torque level, you need to get up a gear. Under normal driving I will change under 2000 rpm, stay in 5th for anything between 40 - 45, change down to 4th for anything under 40.
As for overtaking, there is no point in changing down to too low a gear then running out of grunt half way through the manoeuvre.
Driving a diesel is very different to driving a petrol, drive it like a petrol and you will be disappointed.
Someone said to me, "so whats so special about an Alfa Romeo then?" I told him, "If you have to ask, you wont understand".
Driving Brera S 2.2, wife drives 939 Spider 2.2 and there is a 1972 Spider 2000 S2 in the garage for fun days.
