Whilst doing my first ever service since purchase of my 159 SW I noticed the sump plug was Completely Hammered (literally),
Having had some 7 services in the past from both Nationwide Autocentre and Advantage Motor Group, The hexagon shape of the plug was so damaged and warped that I could not get anything on it,
Some so called mechanic had resorted to using a hammer and chisel to cut 2 grooves into the side wall of the plug putting a raised bump on the flat (sump side) of the plug, and then to make things worse he hit the washer too.
So bent plug, no nut and oval washer what would a half decent mechanic do?.....change it?....
Donít be daft!.... No he tightened it up so hard to stop the leak that am surprised the sump thread wasnít stripped.
After filling the plug into some sort of hexagon shape again on the car, I managed to get a modified hex socket onto it, very hard to do as there is no room to get a proper socket over the damn thing due to the chassis getting in the way.
Took me over 2 hours to get plug loose and then I had the Job of getting a new one.
Needed one fast and after much fun found one in Halfords which was for a different make.
The guy in halfords just shrugged his shoulders when I asked for an alfa sump plug (no change there then!)
Itís a square hole type which I found easy to put on using a modified alan key. Its shorter than the original which also helps with the limited space to get the plug in and out.
It comes with a brass washer and for £2.99 you canít go wrong, fitted like a dream and is spot on.
