Blessed are we gathered here today to witness the passing of another of our kind to meet with our maker.....
After purchasing my second 159 in September and loving it, I mean best car I've had loving it, I have given up.
In the first four months it was great! Had the heater box replaced because the wrong one had been fitted and at the time could only supply cold air to the feet. Then had the cast coolant pipe replaced as that had cracked and was weeping coolant. No big deal - garage were very good all sorted.
However, new year, new problem. Had the oil changed, as the car had asked and since then there have been persistent electrical faults: anti-pinch sensor failure on nearside rear window, rear parking sensor failure, but more seriously a wiring fault that cut the engine and would not let it restart. It went back once, twice, three times - about every four weeks. In fact the last time here I went to pick it up and the car failed a quarter of a mile from the dealer! I was assured it was fixed and then guess what! failed again. This time taken in by AA. By this time I was beginning to lose faith, but after being away for a fortnight again (as the wiring had to be checked each time) it came back working.
Great I thought! and the car seemed to be driving better than ever! I loved it. Then I went out in it only to find that everything to do with movement had failed. It turned out to be that the wiring connector had fallen out of the abs unit. This seemed quite odd as it's a pretty central part to the safety of the car. Because there were no parts replaced I had to pay for the diagnostic plug in to find the fault. OK I suppose so long as it's resolved.
I expressed my concern to Alfa who were pleasant but unresponsive and unable to reassure me that the car would be safe. Two hours after the 'closing' telephone conversation, the same thing happened again.
This time I took it in and I was told that the wiring was faulty again - the repair that had been done was good but the fault was further along the wire(!) Personally I had my doubts but all I really wanted was a working car. Next day I was told that the ABS ecu was being replaced. Anyway car repaired and working, but after spending almost three months out of six in a courtesy car, mostly a Punto, but also a Mito and a Corsa, it's had to go. I just can't keep on turning up to work late and going early to deliver and pick up my car. It's been really hard to let go, but I am just so annoyed and irritated by the whole episode that now I've gone and bought something else: Still four letters and begins with an A, but not Alfa. Apparently or so it would seem, Alfa just aren't bothered about customer loyalty or people who talk positively about them and promote the brand. Personally, over the last ten years, I've spent over £250,000 with Alfa Romeo, not just purchasing cars but through parts, servicing and other products and when I needed them to do something for me, they couldn't be bothered. I know it's not going to be any different with any other manufacturer but maybe if I get something that doesn't break down then I won't end up in the same situation.
We've still got the Mito and you look at the two next to each other and one just oozes style and character and the other looks like a brick. It also means I'll still be hanging around here too.
