Bad egg stink?!!!

After a tortuous journey home (27 miles in over 3 hours) in the snow/ice last eve, as I neared home the car filled with the most overpowering smell of sulphur (bad eggs) imaginable. So bad I was gagging and had to open the window fully.

I tried the air on re-circle and off to no avail. Parked up and thought no more about it till this morning when it re-occurred on the motorway to work. This time it did pass after a while (and good job as I was freezing my knackers off with the window open).

I guess this has something to do with the catalytic converter? I've had whiffs outside cars previously, but never something like this. You cannot believe how strong it is.

Any ideas?

Maybe it decided to do a DPF regen, which involves dumping vast amounts of Diesel into the exhaust.

Has the filter been changed in the cabin? that smell builds up and can be overwhelming.

I wouldn't have thought that a modern diesel burning low-sulphur fuels would have enough sulphur build up to make a nasty smell - that is usually reserved for petrol engines. The occurrences of the stink would fit with regens - but wouldn't explain how the smell got into the cabin.

Has a cat died in the ventilation system? You could try an anti-bacterial air con cleansing spray - just in case. If it persists then its dealer-time again
