Bought a 159 1.9 JTDM Turismo last weekend so I've been driving around with a grin on my face since then. Thought I would give my first impressions of what is the first car I have purchased for 10 years! It's an '05 with 44k on the clock.
Things couldn't be much different from my old car ('92 Mk1 Mx5). Firstly, it looks gorgeous... and kind of like it might bite you if you looked at it without the respect it deserves! It's massive too. Moving from an MX5 to this has been a bit of a new experience when parking in Sainsburys!
But it doesn't feel bulky or large when you're in it which is probably why I didn't realise just how large it is until I parked it next to all the other cars at work. The steering is excellent and I was surprised at how nimbly it takes a corner. The gear change is good (but not amazing), but I'm having a bit of trouble with my size 10 feet as they are forever getting caught under the lip of the cabin, just above the pedals. I'm just going to have to change my seating position a bit, or remove a portion of my feet.
The diesel engine has taken a bit of getting used to (never had a diesel before) but after a week I know where the power is (and more importantly, where it isn't). And it's lovely being pulled out of a corner by that surge of torque!
The interior is lovely. It's nice to see that the Alfa interior quality has increased leaps an bounds compared to my brothers old 145! The leather's plush and the driving position is great. I'm getting a bit obsessed with the "current fuel consumption" display though - must look less at that, and more at the road!
To do list:
- I spent a long time yesterday polishing out minor surface scratches from all 4 corners and the doors, and then waxing as much of the car as I could before the rain started again! More waxing required - if someone could just arrange for it not to rain for a while I'd be very grateful.
- Doesn't have the chrome exhaust tip. I've seen some threads on here about getting the official Alfa one. And Christmas is only round the corner.
- The two thin strips of chrome trim that point from the headlights to the grille are missing! Trim falling off and Alfa?? Surely not! Not sure where to get these from but will be ringing a local Alfa specialist soon to find out. If anyone knows of a good place I can get these from in the mean time, do let me know.
- Grease the squeaky clutch pedal!
All in all I'm chuffed to bits with my new purchase and I'm glad I waited to upgrade my car until I could afford something truly special.
