Once upon a time, most mirrors were chrome - then one day a manufacturer (was it Ford?) made them in black to look sporty. Soon all the cars had black mirrors and looked sporty.
Then a designer who was looking for something to do, said "Wouldn't it look cool if we colour coded things like the bumpers, door handles and mirrors so that everything is in body colour"............ it was a problem to get the paint to stick to plastic initially, but eventually all the prestige models had body-coloured mirrors as a feature to distinguish them from the cheap specification models.
Then one day, someone at Alfa Romeo said "I wonder if these would look good in chrome....", the rest is history.
Fashion is fickle - not worth getting excited about, but if it feels good do it. Not sure it will ever be cool though.
