Hi. Just picked up this thread, and was interested by it because I was looking at buying some engine oil for my 1.9 jtd 16v a few weeks back. Thought it best to have a litre bottle in my boot just in case, although after 12,000 miles have never had to top up the reservoir (which is unheard of to me, after my previous 2.0 JTS which needed topping up every week!).
Anyway, isn't the important factor, (especially with warranty considerations), that you match the exact specification of the oil and not just the grade. For instance, my manual specifies SAE 5W-30 FIAT 9.55535-S1 qualification
So I set about doing a google search to see which engine oil manufacturers produced to this FIAT specification.
Apart from Selenia, which is hugely expensive, I came up with:
FUCHS -TITAN GT1 PRO C-2 SAE 5W-30
Fuchs Lubricants UK Official Website
Luckily at the time Opie oils were doing an offer on this, and I think I picked up 2x 1 litre bottles for £20 (inc. delivery). Still never had to use it yet, but am comforted by the fact that I have the correct specification recommended by the owner's manual.
Would welcome other people's views on checking the exact specification of the oil, as well as just the grade.
I for one don't buy the brand snobbery viewpoint that you should only use Castrol or Selenia; for me it's more important that I have the exact manufacturer spec. oil.
Opinions welcome !
