"B-Pillar rattle" - actually Undertray/Air Filter Box
On my "56" 159 2.2 JTS SW, I had the loud "Rattle". apparently from the B-Pillar, when driving over rough ground/pot holes etc.
I had previously convinced myself that the noise wasn't coming from the Seat Bolt anchor/swivel point. I installed self-adhesive felt to the b-pillar body work behind the pivot and also to the parts of the pivet/swivel to ensure no metal to metal/plastic contact. This didn't cure the problem.
However. I have now done 2 things which appear to have curied the problem;
- I found that the bolt securing the front-driver side corner of the "Undertray" to the engine had sheared off, so the corner was loose and would rattle against the metal Air Filter support bracket in the driver side front wing.
- In the same area I discovered that the Air filter box which is mounted to its support bracket on rubber mounts, had significant lateral movement, and would touch/foul against the bolt that fixes the front wing to the Air Box Support bracket. I've inserted a bit of poly foam (actually a piece of domestic copper pipe insulation) between the Air Box and the bracket.
I think that I still have a very very quiet rattle remaining, but I believe that the above 2 actions have cured the main problem.
