There are quite a few threads about how the fuel economy of the 159 isn't up to scratch or how the tyres evaporate overnight.
So I thought I'd put a counter argument.
I'm about to buy a 159. Hopefully a Ti, definitely in red and likely a diesel.
I currently drive a 4 year old 4x4. It is one of the more frugal models and has a 2L diesel engine. It has a lousy crash test result- the driver will lose this kneecaps and there's no airbags in the rear so my 2 year old would be in deep trouble.
The alfa is undeniably robust and much safer.
The 4wd has a boot that is smaller than the 159, unless you remove the load cover and pile it to the roof. Then one emergency stop and said 2 year old is again squished.
The 159 (if I get a 1.9jtdm) will save me about £1000 per year in fuel, tax, servicing and insurance.
I've included a new pair of Pzeros each year in that too.
I had to sit down after that.
The 4x4 is the car equivalent of valium. 0-60 in God only knows and handling akin to HMS Victory.
159 will be much less depressing to drive and my passengers won't get seasick
So in summary, the 159 is cheaper to run, safer and more spacious than a leading 4x4, and more fun to boot.
What's not to like?
