I was merrily making my way to the Warwick meeting this evening, and while zooming on the A46 (I was doing 80mph or so..) right past the A4447 junction I hear a rattling noise from the front wheel, which grows in a matter of seconds!! It souns like driving on the sidelines of the road, but I know I'm not! It's another fraction of a second and I realise it: my right front wheel tyre has burst!!
The smoke starts to come out copious, but I pop in the emergency lights and in no time I'm on the roadside.. (It must be said that I was really pleased with the car's attitude: steady as a rock despite the damage and the speed, well done there Alfa!)
I carefully got out of the car (there's no much space on that bit of road!) and checked for the damage: the tyre is completely destroyed, but it's a Bridgestone Potenza and it seems like the runflat system has done its duty there! There seems to be no damage on the alloy (but I'll be able to confirm this only tomorrow!). Again, probably not the best tyre on the market, but it did its dirty job ok, and when it's gonna be time to change the tyres I will defo make sure it's a model with runflat system!
An Alfista is an optimist by nature, so I open the boot and think that if I hurry I might still catch with the fellows at the pub, have a pint and a laugh about the mishap (all in all it's just 7,6 miles far!), but with my surprise I notice that there's all but the jack!!!
I will save you the looong list of swear words that I threw at Motorvogue, but tomorrow morning they will get a full update..
I get back in the car, grab the phone and call the AA, who arrives an hour or so later with an armada of vans, towing vehicles and traffic trucks (the last ones where actually there by chance, but helped us deviating the traffic!). The guys tow me to the nearest emergency spot and change my tyre there with the much dreaded spacesaver wheel
It's almost half nine when I sadly start my way back to Northampton, cruise control set to 50mph, and feeling gutted to have lost a really good meeting! The funniest thing is probably that I was driving as fast as I've ever gone so far with the Brera to arrive in time (I was a bit late..), and the way back was as slow as I've ever gone in a car ever..
The only positive note is that I managed to achieve unprecedented mpg readings
Tomorrow morning I'll leave earlier than usual and at lunchtime I'll go and have the tyre changed.. talking of which, what do you guys think of kwik-fit? Can u point me to any good tyre shop in Milton Keynes and surroundings?
