159 Main water tube Plastic Valve explode
I would like to share my problem in order to know if anybody has faced any similar one. I am an owner of an 159 2.4 JTD. I am familiar of Alfa romeo's as i used to own an 33, 155 and a GTV and currently i also have an 166 2.4JTD. I live in central Europe but i come from Greece and usually during summer i always drive with my car there. In May 2006 i bought my 159 which is a fantastic car and i have already drove down there two times. This year (third time) in August i was driving in Greece with 90km an hour (entering the motorway with 4th gear) while the temperature was very hot (41C) and a plastic valve that was located on the main tube of the engine for the water supply exploded.
i should mention that the 166 (which is the same engine although a model of 2004) and the 159 from June 2007, they come out with a metallic valve on this tube.
Due to noise on the motorway i did not hear the "explosion" and the result was that the car lost all the water and of course the engine was seriously damaged, the flange of the engine was burned and the cap of the engine had a minor break.
I should mention that immediately when i had the notification that the engine temperature was very high i stopped on the right side and switched off the engine. I was towed to an authorised Alfa Romeo garage where after 1 week they advised me of the extend of the damage and the very high cost of repair, a little bit more than 3000 Eur.
Since i had to drive back after 3 weeks i decided to repair there the car. I received it at the end of August and i was advised to drive slowly for 1500km (since the engine was opened the cap was new and the engine it self was rectified). Last Saturday i drove in Italy trying to come back to my place and outside the city of Milan (after the car had 1560 km since i received it from the garage), the piston of the engine broke, having the 6th gear and the rpm at 3000. this was the first time after the repair of the garage that the engine climbed up to 3000 rpm.
Having all the invoices from the representative Alfa Romeo garage in Greece (so also 1 year of guarantee for the work done at the engine) i though ok, i will ask my representative garage at Luxembourg where i live to ask Alfa Romeo (the factory) for a new engine or to repair the damage, since the car was always serviced in authorised garages only!
I was surprised to hear that:
- I cannot ask the factory because they are not liable for that.
- My Alfa Romeo garage in Lux cannot cover the damage.
- I need to have an expert to review the engine and write a report where he will state why the problem occured.
- If the outcome is that this is a mistake of the garage in Greece i cannot claim anything from the company Alfa Romeo, but i have to make my claim directly with the garage in Greece that made the repairs.
So does anybody knows any similar cases?
I find it very frustrating that as a client i cannot be compensated directly by Alfa Romeo and i have to move against a garage (so as private to private) and that Alfa Romeo is not assuming any responsibility for the garages that authorises to service their cars and carry their brand.
And a word of advice.... Check your 159 if this tube (metalic located behind the refrigarator and close to the engine) has also this plastic valve. After June 2007 and having lots of them bursting due to high temperature this comes out now as metallic, but they never recalled the 159 from 2005 and 2006 with the plastic ones to replace them. Now the general directive of Alfa Romeo is if there is a burst of this valve replace the whole water tube with a new one that will carry a metallic valve.
Any suggestions as of how i could deal with that or previous cases that you may know would be very helpful!
Thank you all in advance,
