Is this overfueling, if so how?
Car: 159 1.9Jtd no mods.
Driving style and conditions: Mixed roads dual carriageway, A roads etc for 44 mile round trip commute each day, some town driving. Some spirited driving, but less than in previous car. Running on Shell 'cooking' diesel.
Problem: Car 'coughs', makes Scch Scch sound around 1500 - 2000 rpm which combines with judder. Mainly obvious on slow speed gear change and slow speed light throttle 'holding' speed in 4th/5th. the sound might be like gas escaping under pressure (wastegate valve?)
Other symptoms that I feel are related: 35mpg (down from 39) sooty exhaust, some smoke visible via rear view mirror accelerating after period of slow speeds. For the record the 35mpg is tank to tank, the computer displays around 42. My previous car was a Saab with the same engine which did 42mpg tank to tank.
My dealer has been very good and is trying different things, (I actually talk to the senior mechanic!) they have so far changed the restrictor between the EGR and the manifold and went through a 14 page 'possible problems document' from AR. This showed up a loose hose on the turbo, that fix has made the engine smoother, noticeable different, but the other problem still exists.
If anyone can help in diagnosis, I would be very grateful.
Someone said to me, "so whats so special about an Alfa Romeo then?" I told him, "If you have to ask, you wont understand".
Driving Brera S 2.2, wife drives 939 Spider 2.2 and there is a 1972 Spider 2000 S2 in the garage for fun days.
