Whilst it is always possible to improve the performance of a car, not just Alfas, by remapping or adding a tuning box, you should have some sympathy with the manufacturers who have to ensure that each and every vehicle passing through their doors meets all the emission standards. This has to be irrespective of the quality of the fuel, the climate, style of driving and the atmospheric conditions.
Because they have to err on the side of caution they balance performance with economy and durability, within a strict emission standard, you end up with lower ultimate performance than is possible with that engine.
When you re-map or add a box, basically you stick two fingers up to the emissions, pray that economy doesn't suffer and hope that the whole lot doesn't go bang and cause warranty problems. The manufacturers can't take that gamble, so they don't.
It was ever thus.
Blame the Eurocrats.
