I'd like to canvas the Forum's accumulated wisdom. I'm thinking of chopping in my current diesel Brera for a petrol version - I love the car in general, it's just the diesel element that I'm fed-up with. The power and torque are great but the powerband is so short it's like riding a two stroke motorbike. I could live with that but I've limped home with a clogged DPF so many sodding times I just ain't going there again.
So, what to get next?
I think the 2.2 is out because I think the engine would be too gutless after what I've become used to. So I'm thinking 3.2 V6 FWD. I'd be interested to try the the new 1750 tbi (is that right?) but they're not around yet.
I don't think the 'S' version is for me because I want Blue & Me and SkyView and most of my journeys are motorway without too many twisties, so the softer handling of the regular car is fine. For the same reason the Q4 would be wasted and indeed wasteful.
So I'd like to hear from people with experience of the 3.2. What are the pros and cons? How bad is the fuel consumption? (I've only averaged 26.5 mpg
from the 2.4 so I'm not expecting anything like Alfa's official figures). Is it a satisfying, enjoyable engine? (I really couldn't care less whether it's a GM block or not, so please don't bring that up).
On another topic, apart from looks, do 18 & 19 inch rims have any advantages? (I know there's less unsprung weight etc., but see above as regards the type of driving I mostly do) The excessive wear issue seems to be worse with 18s and 19s, so I'm thinking I'll go for 17" rims - am I mad?
So, informed views would be very welcome.
