I had a nasty knocking noise when steering until recently. I took it to my local garage which seemed to have been very good to me in the past and they told me that I needed a new steering rack. They then quoted me £480 so I thought ok time to call a friend and see if he can do it as I had just had 72000 mile service (inc cambelt), MOT and tires I couldn't justify spending another £480. My friend took my word that I needed a new steering rack and bought one, when I brought him my car he had it fixed within 10 minutes and I didn't need a steering rack at all; it was something to do with the steering arm (or something around that area) being really loose so it simply needed tightening! The tracking was way out too so i will keep an eye on it for a while. I just don't know who to trust now. Would that garage have still replaced the rack and charged me £480 or would they have stated they changed it and still charged the money? If you find a garage/mechanic you can trust then stick with them!
