The steering used to make creaking groaning noises earlier but this was cured by cleaning of the drivers side steering rack ball joint and lubricating it with moisture repellant grease and re-clipping the rubber gaiters correctly!
Inspite of the above, I had left my 2.2 159 at Northgate Alfa due to front wheel alignment issues (steering crooked and pulling to one side), steering feeling progressively heavier with time and increased tyre wear. On inspection they said there was too much play in the steering rack and replaced it under warranty quite quickly. Seems that there definitely is a problem with the quality of the seering racks produced or with the way they have been assembled. After replacement though, the steering feels light and considerably more responsive. I can now turn the steering around corners with just one hand which I struggled to do easily before (my arms always used to ache after a long drive with the old rack!).
I would urge all 159 owners, especially 2.2 engine cars, to have the steering rack inspected. If the dealer isnt that good, it would be prudent to use a good independent garage (MOT ones will be good as they inspect these as part of the tests). My warranty is about to expire in 10 days, so am going to book it for an MOT with my local BOSCH garage very soon along with a full checkup to identify any problems before warranty runs out.
