Re: Which Diesel Engine?

Yeah, some peak at 205bhp - at which time there isnt enough air or fuel to go higher!

189 is usually achieveable though, just a word of warning for people buying 200bhp maps on the 16 valve.

Re: Which Diesel Engine?

I've had a 1.9 159 courtesy car for the past week, and I was very interested to see how it compared to my 1.9M-jet 147 (140) as I may still want a 159 as my next car.

First impressions were quite good, it wasn't as slow as I had expected form reading posts on AO, but as the week went on I had an opportunity to compare the two and was a bit shocked to discover that after accelerating out of a junction at the point where my car usually hits 60mph the 159 was reading 50.
I know this isn't exactly scientific or conclusive, but as Fraser said it does seem to me that the 1.9 in the 159 seems to feel a bit quicker than it actually is.

also although the official 0-60 times are very similar, they are also slightly misleading
my 147, 9.1secs, 2 Adults + 20Kg, say (2x75)+20 = 170kg
1.9 159, 9.2secs, driver + 30kg, say 75+30 = 105kg

I could live with the performance of the 1.9, but I'd prefer more.
If I could afford the company car tax I'd maybe prefer the 2.4. (haven't driven one can't say for sure)
I'm hoping the forthcoming 2.0 will be (for me) the perfect blend of both

Marksie the 2.0 engine will be a gem but don't expect any deals on it - it will be full price for quite a while i'd imagine.

Re: Which Diesel Engine?

Coming off a sliproad today to join the carriageway, I left the Brera in 2nd and took it all the way through to 6k Revs, I was amazed at the sound it made after 4k Revs... I will be doing it again tomorrow!

Very Impressed!

Re: Which Diesel Engine?

are you sure it went up to 6k? i'm pretty sure it 'cuts' arround 5.2k
anyway, after 4.7k you actually get less 'power'

Re: Which Diesel Engine?

I have a 159 2.4 210bhp demo Sw out for the last day. The acceleration of the 2.4 over my 1.9 GT is much different. Took it up to 160kmh on the motorway last night and it gets there noticeably quicker than the GT.

One thing which is very noticeable is the smoothness the 2.4 has over the 1.9
A lot of people have commented on how noisy the 1.9 is. Its very diesel tractor sounding but anyone who has come to look at the 2.4 in the last 24hrs said they barely noticed it was a diesel.

Is this true between both engines or is my 1.9 louder than expected?
There are 40,000km on the 1.9 and 13,000km on the 2.4

Re: Which Diesel Engine?

I haven't driven the 1.9; but can certainly say that my 2.4 never sounds like a diesel other than from outside the car at tick-over. In fact it's the first diesel car I've had where the engine at 4k revs makes a really good sound. I've previously had a Jag with the 2.7 twin turbo diesel - again a superb engine that didn't sound like a diesel; but then that didn't sound as good as the Alfa when extended. Incidentally, there's been a lot of negative comments about the poor fuel consumption of the 2.4 - I drive mine hard, and it's doing 35mpg, which I think is excellant!

Mine doesn't hit the limiter until around 5,400 rpm and pulls to about 5,200.
