It's just platform sharing. All the manufacturers are doing it these days. Really, there are too many manufacturers methinks...
Probably need some to go bust so the others can make a profit from higher market share. Failing that, yes they do need to merge and share costs, e.g. by co-developing platforms.
It won't make the cars all the same as each other.
The GTV was a great car but the platform was a Tipo platform (IIRC).
The Audi TT was based on the Golf IV (not sure what the latest one is, maybe Golf V).
It's been going on for years.
