As modern cars go they're really not bad and shouldn't cause more problems than any other out-of-warranty car, that said the 2.4 does have more reliability issues than the petrols.
That's probably only because the petrols seem to be bulletproof though!
Oh and personally, I don't buy a car in the first year of its production run. However, after 3 years such a car may well have been all fixed up under warranty, I think the only way you can tell is to have a good test drive. I guess that can be a problem second hand - but at least you can sit in the drivers seat and look out for squeaks, rocking seat etc. Then go on a test drive as passenger, if the drive is really long, it might be enough to detect DPF, EGR or swirl valve issues.
