I have recently got a 159 which came with some new Pirelli Pzero neros 235/45ZR18 98Y on the front and back.
Now, officially these tyres are classified as ultra high performance summer tyres.
The UK market is right at the bottom of the table with all the northern European countries for using winter tyres in the winter (statistics show we are changing very slowly) while countries like Germany and Holland which have very similar winter climates as the UK used to have the same attitude for winter tyres as us (winter tyres? don’t be ridicules) but now have a huge sale of winter tyres (Germany some 50% and Holland 12% and UK 3%!!!)
% Total UK car accidents caused by skidding
(Yet we still laugh at the concept of winter tyres)
So my questions are;
What are the Pzero nero's like to drive in the winter?
Should i worry about it and put some for example Pirelli Winter Sottozero Serie II 225/50R17 98H for the months of 7C and below?
(and spread the wear of the tyres between them)
I live in norway, and we have 4/5 months of the year where we are to have winter tyres.
Now these can be with or without spikes...but you can use summer tyres all year round, allouth your insurance could be void..
now i have some great winter tyres, and in all honesty, even in the snow i can not tell the difference...but i can with spikes on ice....
i think it IS a good idea to use winter tyres in winter, even if they do FEEL the same.
The road safety peeps in norway have this rule, if its below 10 then you should use winter tyres, as they are softer and do not need to warm up before they work, and above 10 you use summer tyres, as they are harder and work better in hot weather.
2 other things, winter tyres wear out 30/40faster in dry weather, due to the fact they are A LOT SOFTER, and they are much noise on the road, they also make a lot of tyre SCREACH if you take a corner in hot weather (due to sliping as they are to soft)
you can also buy ALL YEAR tyres, but i do not know much about these?
so the choice is yours?
i think a summer and winter set is a good idea
