Sorry my wording was not very clear - i realise people have had better than this (god help us if they haven't) some others have had similar though and seem to think it's acceptable and just par for the course...when clearly it's not...I just think Alfa have got a bit lazy with this engine and should be doing something to address it
Thing is that you can't say "it's clearly not acceptable" without knowing they type of journeys, the length of journey, whether the car ever gets up to temperature, whether the driver uses the throttle like an on/off switch, whatever.
Picking out the lowest number that anyone quotes, any time 159 economy comes up, and then repeatedly saying that it's not good enough doesn't seem to add much to the sum of our knowledge. Maybe you're subconsciously trying to talk yourself out of buying one.
When I start the car up from cold, drive ~2 miles to the beach, and then switch if off again, I know
that the economy is going to suffer. And I know
that when I do a longer journey at motorway speeds the economy is better, but the more frequent short journeys drag down the average. So in those very-far-from-ideal circumstances, poor economy is
You're right that BMW has some great engines - you pay through the nose for them, but if you do enough miles then you might break even. We know Alfa has new engines coming, but I doubt they'll be class-leading for economy - I'm not sure that's ever
been their priority, and I'm not sure I'd ever want it to be.
