On a 2008 1.9, the service interval is 21,000 miles. I think this was raised from 18,000 at some stage, but not sure exactly when. As for issues, there's NOTHING that is not fixable, but depending on the age of the car, you might look for....front tyres wearing on their inside edge.....rocking drivers seat.....creaking windscreen...windscreen wipers catching the paint on the underside of the bonnet....er, what have I missed?
And after just 400 miles in my new 1.9, I would agree with what has been said about performance, but add that IMO this unit needs to be driven pretty much like a petrol engine. Don't expect tons of grunt at 1,800 rpm like most diesels, this one makes really good progress around 3,000rpm, like a petrol would. Although I guess my engine is still pretty tight and new, so might change it's characteristics slightly, but not radically. You even have to blip the throttle to get a good clean pull away, just like a petrol. :-)
