DON'T EVER BUY AN ALFA 159 2.4, or any other Alfa for that matter.
My Sportwagon is dreadful. It keeps going wrong. The gearchange is awful. The MPG is usually sub 30. The tyres seem to melt after 10 - 12K. And it rattles at any speed over 40MPH.
It has been back to the dealers so many times I have lost count.
Last summer, the local dealer suggested I talk with ARUK, which I did. I wrote a letter detailing all the problems and I described how I had lost faith in the car and did not want to keep it. Nick Jackson at ARUK said they would swap it for another similar one, and I even agreed to pay the difference in book price if they could find me another one.
Sadly, the only one they offered was equally as bad. It had broken down 7 times in 15k, and it appears that the owner got shot of it after it died again on the M6. The problems seemed to be very similar to mine.
Nick did offer me an extra 1 year warranty if he failed to find me a replacement vehicle, but promised to keep looking. In all, Nick was very pleasant and appeared to be trying to help. The last time I spoke, he told me he would write to me confirming the extended warranty.
Nick left ARUK before Christmas and nobody took up my case. Then I started over again with someone called Martin, who also seems to have vanished. The case has now been transferred to AR in Italy. I had a call from a guy called John today. They have reviewed my case, withdrawn the offer to replace the car, withdrawn the offer of an extended warranty and "as a gesture of goodwill" offered me a £100 voucher to spend at a main dealer.
I have given him 2 weeks to get this sorted or I will start a one man assault on the Alfa brand in the UK.
I was a committed Alfa fan - I have had numerous Alfas which I have loved - the 159 is an awful car and the customer service is appalling.
I genuinly do feel for you and hope you get some resolution to the problems you have had. I do however feel that stating that the "159 is awful" is a slighly misplaced comment considering you have posted it on an 'Alfa Enthusiasts' site - I have previously owned a GTV (said to be one of the least reliable and most problematic of all models) and had no significant problems with it, I am now looking forward to collecting my 159 this weekend but perhaps a little less so after reading this thead.
Like many have already said it is clear that you have been very unfortunate with your car, every manufacturer on the planet is subject to making a poor car once in while (with the numbers produced it is bound to happen - nothing and no one is perfect), I think you have been very unlucky and had you selected a good car (of course not suggesting that you could have possibly known at the time) you would have a very different opinion of the car/model/manufacturer.
I do hope you dont take this the wrong way, I really am very sympathetic of your problems and believe the treatment you've had is totally unfair - I understand that you have wanted to love the car but haven't been able to do given the many issues, and therefore understand your displeasure with Alfa Romeo - but as a dedicated fan of the manufacturer and the cars they produce I feel I must defend them to an extent and raise the issue with your statement that suggests "all" 159's are awful - there are many 159 owners that are more than happy with the cars and I hope to soon be one of them.
Again, I hope you are able to resolve the problems to your satisfaction - the very best of luck to you.
