Petrol in to diesel tank
Petrol in to a diesel tank
While touring in Cornwall the last few days I stopped for fuel with my Brera diesel and by mistake I filled up about 7.7 litres of unleaded before I realised my mistake.
Panic set in, I decided not to start the engine just in case it would do any damage to the fuel system and contacted the AA for some advice, a lady told me that the car would have to be towed to a garage the tank drained.
I then remembered that I had red that it is not so bad to put petrol in to a diesel but very bad diesel in to petrol.
So I called back the AA and I asked if I could speak with someone that could give me further advice, the lady put me on hold and after about 15 agonizing seconds she asked me how many litres did the tank hold, after my reply she put me on hold again for what it seemed an eternity and told me that as I only had put just over seven litres I should fill the thank full of diesel and top it up again once it went down by a third.
I pushed the car with the help of my wife and some other drivers in the forecourt including a gentleman driving one other Alfa ( thank you if you are reading this) and filled the tank to the top, I started the engine and to my relief it sounded just as normal.
I took it easy for about 20 miles and drove as I normally do without any problem thereafter.
I topped up the tank when it went down by a third and drove a further 285 miles all the way home to Bucks just as nothing ever happened.
I will be more careful in future when I fill up.
