Much more reliable than the 2.4, manifolds, injectors, swirl valves etc
That's the thing, though - as far as I can make out a small number of the early 200bhp 2.4 engines had these problems, and they were fixed under warranty - i.e. something went wrong with them and it was put right.
Rightly or wrongly, it isn't the 2.4 owners who are complaining to the press about their engines, or demanding that Alfa remaps them because they're apparently unsafe to drive.
If the 2.2 is a pup, fine - complain about the issues until they're resolved.
If the 2.2 is a brilliant engine, fine - recommend it to people considering a 159 / Brera / Spider.
But to do both - to recommend someone buys a car with that engine while the person recommending it is in dispute with Alfa as to whether it is fit for purpose - is surely a bit odd.
I have neither, so have no particular axe to grind in terms of defending my own choice.
