Re: Performance of 2.2 JTS vs Mapped 1.9 Jtdm
I bought a 1.9 JTDm, which was my third choice of engine. First choice would have been the 2.4, then the 3.2. The 2.2 was a distant fourth for me.
If I'd liked the 2.2, I'd have put up with the poorer economy and the fact that the road tax is double, but I just didn't get on with it.
At low revs there seems to be nothing much there, and there isn't much pleasure in revving it because it doesn't make a very nice noise.
And although I've no problem with engines you have to thrash to get much out of (our old Seicento Sporting, for instance, or even the 1.6 in our 147) I think it's an experience better suited to smaller cars. The 159/Brera seem too grown up for that.
The only time the 2.2 seemed to make sense was on track, where you were thrashing it all the time, and where the slightly lighter nose made a difference.
I ruled out the 2.4 and 3.2 on the basis that it isn't meant to be my fun car, so although they're both better (quite a lot better) engines than the 1.9, I couldn't justify the extra costs.
It's all personal preference, I suppose, and also based on what you're used to. Coming out of a 3.0 GTV, I didn't rate the 2.2 at all - if I'd been driving a 2.0 GTV, maybe I'd have loved it.
