Re: Performance of 2.2 JTS vs Mapped 1.9 Jtdm
The diesel was the logical choice for me as I buy a lot of fuel on the continent where diesel is heaps cheaper and it makes finanical sense to run diesel even when only doing modest mileages P.A.
Since buying my Spider I have driven 159s and Spiders with the 2.2 I struggle to see the attraction to be honest. Dont get me wrong I love a good petrol engine, but IMHO the 2.2 Alfa unit i not one of them.
Granted I have only driven demonstrators with quite low miles (6-8k) but they felt gutless, the sound wasnt amazing and there was never any urgency from the engine, which is what I want from a petrol!
Subjectively the 2.4JTDm sounds like a bag of nails on a cold morning but once its warm you really cant hear much of a difference from a petrol engine. It lacks the petrol banshee wail, but the off-beat 5cyl sound is actually something I like.
It pulls well, has bags of overtaking grunt and is perfect on the mway cruise.
I would still take a V6 over the diesel, but given the choice between the 2.2 and diesel, its heavy oil every time!
